Do you want to learn how to be a perfect beekeeper?
Bee Smart and Join our course!

This two day course (taking place on two consecutive Saturdays) will teach you everything you need to know to set up and look after your own hive. The course is taught by Living Under One Sun’s very own ‘bee whisperer’ Ian Bailey who has been a beekeeper for the last 16 years and runs 30 urban hives across the capital. The course will be based around Living Under One Sun’s own beehives, so there will be a chance to meet the bees, but most of the course is theoretical.
The theory course will be followed by weekend drop in sessions run by the Living Under One Sun beekeepers where you can get hands on experience in looking after the bees throughout the year, including helping out with the August harvest.

Program of the Course

  • -the honey bee, where it came from and its life cycle
  • -reproduction and swarming
  • -the hive
  • -bee health
  • -the beekeeper’s season, nectar and pollen
  • -harvesting, processing and honey tasting
  • -meet the bees (weather dependent)
Refreshments will be provided but please bring your own lunch and a bottle of water. Higher waged fees go towards subsidising places for local residents on lower incomes and support LUOS's work in the community. If you feel that this is too much for you, please contact the office as we offer some training events in return for time spent volunteering on our projects.
